dual exhaust with 40 series will be pretty raunchy, what do you consider loud? My 5.4l with single pipe and a 50 series has some good deep noise to it, not quite enough though to annoy the neighbors in the morning. Go to flowmaster web site and and you can hear the different muffler sounds and then decide the sound you want.

the only thing i dont want to happen is for it to wrap out at high rpms
thats the only thing i dont like
perfect sound for me would be like 18 in. glasspacks without the cats but i gotta keep the cats on cuz in my area they pull people over and check for cats if they think its too loud

Corsa exhaust is louder than the flowmaster. Its almost more of a tin sound whereas the flowmaster is the deeper of the two.

The 40 series muffler will not wrap at all, and has a deep throaty growl. It is not loud like a glasspack would be but it does have resonance and drone at 60 mph. At idle it is not as noticeable, quiets down nicely.

I am willing to bet that the glasspacks won't wrap with the cats in place? Unsure about that one. But you stated that the perfect sound would be 18 inch glasspacks without the cats? Wouldn't that give you the wrapping sound at high rpm- the sound that you don't want.

Another suggestion is no muffler at all, straight pipe.

I have 2 cats on my 02 F-150 and I have a single 50 series F/M and it sounds almost stock--V6 too and IMO a loud V-6 sounds gay!!! So are you after noise or decent effect? I'm kind of lost. Someone mentioned straight pipe???
I'm older so I really don't need the attention of my pipes anymore, but I like duals because it will release any horsepower and just free it all up. May not ever see it but it will. Also remember that if you have 48in diameter by 48 in long tips you are going to create extra noise? So pick yer poison.

I'd say a quality muffler will work for your application, not to dispute your question. Glasspacks are low budget, thus the sound you receive. F/M or similiar type muffler is respectable and quality is the same. The pipe you run is the key as well, size and bends ect.
Look at Magna flow as well.

was in the same situation as you were, have a 96 f-150 but with the 5.8, the best sound i got out of it with the cats on it, were with no muffler, just strait pipe, and it still wasnt loud, before that i had a magnaflow race series on it with both cats and it wasnt loud, but you could tell it wasnt stock, now am catless and have glasspacks on it with duels out the back, 29 inch glasspack, sounds good but am going down monday and getting a 18 in purple hornie put on, but price wise when i first got my stuff put on, it was 100.00 for the magnaflow at the shop, then another 100.00 to run the duels after the muffler with 2.25 inch pipe and 25.00 for the 2 3.50 inch tips.... so 225.00 is what i paid for all of mine to start.. another option is maybe a highflow cat, might get a little more sound out of it, and stay with in emmisions and you can find them pretty reasonable on Ebay..

is that with pipes and all? In my area if I bring the mufflers and tips I could get it below 300, but at that point I would have spent 300 bucks on the whole lot! If they supplied it would be outragous. Good luck. Also keep in mind call before you go if you plan on usin your own stuff, some shops play hard to get since you are saving money. I know I had some issues at one time.

Personally I would go with Dynomax Super Turbos. You can buy 2 of them, $35 each, for the price of 1 Flowmaster 40 and they flow more air. I think they are a little more on the quiet side than a F/M but there is nothing wrong with that. I went with a SI/DO and 2.5 pipe all the way from the y-pipe back on my V6 S10 for $150 and that included a pair of bowtie tips. I priced a complete manifold-back (35+ feet) system on my 78 long bed supercab with a Dynomax and tips for $300. Just thought I would toss my 1/2 cent into this.
