arthroscopic knee surgery

Anyone had it done? The results of my MRI came back and the doc cant find anything abnormal. I'm a little aprehensive about letting doctors tear apart my knee.

What was the pain like, how long? What was the recovery time?

Had a torn ACL 9 years ago while in the military. Had surgery on a Friday, went home Sunday. It was pretty painful for a couple of days, but it was bearable with some good pain killers. The worst was sleeping. If I moved it the wrong way, I woke up in agonizing pain. I was on crutches for 2 weeks before I could walk normally. Therapy lasted a long time. 6 months if I remember correctly. Since I was in the military, it was no problem missing work. As long as you can find a doctor you are confident in, you should be fine. My knee today is 100% and feels stronger than the other knee. Exercise after surgery is VERY important. You have to keep youre muscles strong and flexible. So follow your doctors instructions. Good luck and dont worry.

Same thing as Icefan. The arthoscopic isn't that bad, they numb you up before doing it. I watched mine on the TV while they did it.

What hurts the most is the physical terrorist, I mean therapist. I have never felt that tortured in my life. That's what sucked. The only part I looked forward to was the Stim Machine. Hahaha, stim is good!

I had it done in 1994. No big deal really. The first two days after surgery were the worse for me but after that, everything healed fine. Like the others mentioned, the therapy was the worse part.

I had cartilage removed from my knee so it still bothers me to this day due to the bone on bone grinding since there is nothing there to coushin it, not the surgery it's self.

I've had 4, 2 major and 2 minor. ACL and cartilage repair where major. Good drugs, a water machine to control swelling and after about 2 weeks I could get around with a crutch or cane. About 12 to 24 weeks to fully heal with good physical therapy.

The 2 minor runs and I was up and walking the same day and playing in 2 weeks. No pain at all really.

I would really question allowing the doctor to go in if they can't find anything on a MRI or an x-ray.

The worst part of mine was the surgery was scheduled for 1 PM and I couldn't have anything to eat or drink (ie: coffee!) after midnight the night before. Good drugs, though. The recovery nurses brought me coffee as soon as I was out of surgery. I, too, watched the surgery on the monitor (see above) and was out later that afternoon. A day or two on crutches, a few days with a cane, good as new in a week.

I second that. Unless the doctor says its mandatory to fix something, don't do it. I had surgery over a year ago and it is painful when I sit for long periods. It wasn't mandatory, but the doc said I could possibly take a year or more to heal without it. Wish I hadn't done it.

The doctor may not find anything on the MRI but they cant always pick up everything. You may have bone fragments that can calcify and cause lots of pain later down the road. What was the knee injury caused from?

June of 2004 had artho done on my right knee for a torn meniscus. Jan of 2005 I had the same artho surgery done on my left knee. Now I really wish I had not let them cut on either knee.

I had mine done for the second time this Feb. and I am still having a bit of a problem with it. If I am on it for long periods it still swells some. I will admit that I didn't rehab quite like I should have and it is partly my fault. The first one took some time because the meniscus had folded up and locked my leg in a bent position, it really wasn't the pain of the surgery that hurt but the muscle spasms from my leg being locked for about 5 days in a bent position. I could walk about 10 feet and then every muscle in my leg would spasm. What are your symtoms? That would be some of the deciding factors on what I would do. If you can get by without it I would say hold off unless you really need it.

Had athroscopic surgery done in 1987 for torn medial meniscus of the left knee.

After that was performed (as 'exploratory' too) an osteoid osteoma (bone tumor) was removed from just under the growth plate on the left knee.

The tumor was huge! The M.D.'s knew it was there. Just a matter of how big.
Anyway, after the cast was removed and therapy, the left knee is stronger than the right.

Arthritis is getting both of them, though.
It's all a matter of age. Time stands still for no-one.

in 1995 (15yo) I hurt my knee playing football. Ortho doc thought I tore a ligiment, put me in a brace for a few weeks.... all was good

in 1997 same thing happened in HS gym class (got drug off the court as the gym was filling for a pep rally) Doc did an MRI and I think found a tear in the cartilige. REhabed my knee for 6-8 weeks. All was fine

july 2005 Was in a dump trailer, unloading wood went to climb out, threw right leg over the side, heardd "tear, pop" and knew the same or simmiliar just happened. Ive been rehabing it since trhen, and its still improving.

I had done 4 times.

It's no biggy.
It is in fact the least intrusive way of doing things.

Most people are up & walking again within 12 hours. It depends on what physical shape your legs were in before the procedure.

Just had my knee scoped for a torm meniscus 4 weeks ago.I run 5 miles or so 3 times a week.I am up to 4 miles already.I am 45 yrs old but I'm sure 10 years ago I would be better than I am now.Still have some swelling but otherwise I am good. The day after surgery I felt great. The second day it hurt like he11.I was on crutches for 2 days and then it started to get better.I have been putting it off since last September and I wish I had done it sooner.Mind you a torn miniscus is not like a torn ACL...your results may vary.PM me if ya want more info.Good luck.

I really don't want to read this post but it got my attention. About 4 weeks ago, I went swimming with my boys and did the ole cannonball in the shallow end of the pool. Realizing I'm no longer 25 and less than 200 lbs. I hit the bottom of the pool pretty good, jamming my right knee. They took XRays and said they are negative. I don't really have swelling, but the knee and calf muscles are stiff and tight and I need a support if I'm walking around. I've been exercising a little but it stiffens up on me when I do. I'm able to bend it and stand on it, but sometimes if I turn or twist, it'll give me a reminder. I'm hoping time will heal it. Don't care for any type of surgery on my knees. I'm curious, how long do knee injures take to heal?
