I used my trailer for the first time this year...no running lights...brakes and blinkers..I called a trailer place they said ground wire is off or lose on truck. My truck is a 98 f150 with factory mounted 7 wire harness. Has always worked until now. where is the ground????? I looked quickly and did not see anything obvious. Checked fuses..they are good. Really don't want to take it in for this if it is simple fix...can anyone help me out....
I would look for the ground on the trailer. It should be a wire coming out of the plug and then runs a short distance and bolts to the frame. Trace this wire up to the trailer plug, and then figure out what pin location it is, and then try to find it on the truck. There is a standard to the connections on the plugs, but I can't remember what pin the ground should be. If you want to take the trailer plug apart, they are usually marked inside as to what wires go where. When you figure out what pin it is, the truck should have the same deal. There should be a wire coming out and running for a short distance, and then bolted to the frame or the body somewhere in the rear.
On the truck, the ground socket should be at 7 o"clock and marker lights at 11 o'clock. A test light between those two should show hot. Note that the trailer plug, looking at the end, is opposite , 5 and 2 o'clock. A test between those two should show continuity. Even a cheap little multi-meter is a handy tool.
Good luck.
I'll bet that the ground on the trailer is the problem. Don't rely on the continuity between the front and back of the trailer, run a ground wire directly to the lights on the trailer.
