Question E40D O/D indicator flashes sometimes

I have a 97 F250 SD 4x4 with the auto trans and occasionally the "Overdrive OFF" indicator on the gear shift flashes and shifts harshly. When I shut it off it does not ususally start up again until it has gone some distance, but I haven't been able to establish a pattern there. I use the truck to pull a large stock trailer and it was running hot a few days ago, but never flashed the check engine light. I am thinking a bad connection on the harness to the tranny. I smelled the oil and it does not smell burnt. The truck has ~217k miles, but runs great and uses no oil, and has no leaks. The manual says take it to a dealer ASAP, but that usually incurs a lot of $$pain$$ and doesn't always fix these intermittent problems. Any thoughts or inputs welcome.

Thnaks, Ron.

When the light flases a code is stored in the computer to tell you what's wrong. You need someone to read the code and then we can figure out what needs fixing. Without the code all you can do is geuss.

Don't take it to a dealer. Take it to an local, trustworthy shop.

E40D problem

I checked the codes last night and there was nothing new there, then I took it for a drive and it behaved fine. My wife took it out today on a 15 mile run with the trailer and it worked fine again, so I am thinking it is wiring. I washed out the rad a few days ago and washed some of the engine at the same time, so I am suspecting a poor connection somewhere.

Thanks for the inputs, I will keep posting if it returns, in the meantime, I will check all tranny connections.

Ron
