dirty oil ?

The oil in my 2000 7.3L PSD stays pretty clean in between oil changes..
The oil tech's at valvoline say they dont see to many diesels come in with
clean oil. Is this a sign of a healthy motor ?? What causes the oil to get
dark in so many diesels ?? Thanks for any info on this, just curious ..

I just turned 150k on my '99 and the oil stays pretty clean also between changes at 5000 mile intervals. I've always taken good care of this engine and still in great shape. If you are not the original owner I'd think who ever owned it kept up on all his oil changes and what not.

the soot levels in diesel exhaust cause the carbon build up (the blackening of oil) in diesels. that is why it gets black so quick. dont worry, the oil is still good. probably means you have a great set of rings on the truck.

My first PSD ('95) the oil would start turning black at about 1500 miles. My Cat 3208 in my motor home does the same thing. But my 99 PSD stays clean up to at least 5500 miles. That is the longest I have ever let it go. I have 157,000 on it as of today and it still runs just like new. The oil has yet to ever turn the black I have learned to expect from diesel. I have thought a Wednesday engine was the reason. Possible??

my late '99 PSD has about 7000 miles since last change and you can still see through the oil its that clean (Rotella T 15w40)

My buddy bought a 2000 PSD a couple of months ago, when we changed the oil (Rotella), fired the truck up for about 5 minutes shut it off and checked the oil. It was already dirty, couldnt see through to the dipstick. Is this a sign his motor is going sour? His truck seems to run just fine too.

no the engine is fine that is the soot being suspended in the oil.

OK, but so far no one has said they know why some soot up and others don't.

do you do any or no idling at all ? If there is very little time spent idling and at low rpm's you may not be getting as much soot. On the other hand if the wrong oil is used it may not be suspending the soot as it should and therefore not looking black.

I have 205k and my oil gets pretty dark quick. Is there anything I can do to clean up my engine a little bit? Would running a couple quarts of oil through the engine help?

This is what I have always thought. Being an old drag racer that always built my own (very fast) motors I know that being diligent at every step is very important. I have always used Rotella in the Ford and Syntec in the Cat. $200.00 bucks to change that sucker, but I lost one once and cost me 16 grand to replace and I ain't gonna let it happen again.
