Need some input on my Ford Ranger 4 by 4 I need
help with after driving it for about a mile it starts missing and black smoke
starts blowing out if I nail it to the floor it clears out but as soon as I
let ti off the floor it starts missing again? If I shut it off for a few
minutes and start it again it will run fine for a few minutes?
Sounds like a overly rich air/fuel mixture, but we'll need more info about your, ride to make a decent guess as to whats causing it, or why.
Would be helpful if we knew more about what year/engine/tranny, the mileage you have on it, are you up to date on scheduled maintenance, past & present & if this problem began suddenly after some event, or slowly over time.

Reason: omitted some words
the year is 1988 xlt 4x4 with 2.9 and just had a oil change ,both fuel filters changed, map sending unit, pcv valve and new air filter and spark plugs. and have tune up regular. but still blows black smoke.
after our last hurricane dennis my truck needed some fuel so i had some left over in a gas can so put some of it in the tank as soon as i got on the highway it started blowing black smoke ( yes it was gas in the can) i then stoped and a gas station and put some gas treatment in and also filled up with regular gas. i still was getting black smoke so i changed every thing i could think of. last night i even pulled of the o2 sensor wiped off and installed
Ok good feedback, so the problem began suddenly, after reaching highway speeds, after you poured in some gas from a can, after the last hurricane in your area.
You know the fluid in the can was gas & was ok, right????
If so, then that leaves us looking at something happening to the truck because of something the hurricane did to it, like flood it & get some electricals wet, or the gas & hurricane had little or nothing to do with the problem & something just went belly up after warm up at highway speeds.
Have you done as 87 XLT suggested & pulled the computer codes????
If so, post ALL the codes you retrieved, maybe one will give us a good hint on the next best move.
It sounds like something that controls the air/fuel mixture is acting out.
Things like clogged air filter or intake to the air box, excessive fuel pressure, MAP, MAF, O2, engine or IAT temp sensors, things like that come to mind.
So pull the computer codes & post ALL you find, before throwing any more money at the problem.
Maybe we can think this one through, if the computer will offer up some hints.
Also check the second red "Read First" Technical sticky at the top of this forum for info on how to test many of the things I've mentioned above. real good info there!!!!
