I'm an electrician, and I like Metal Halide bulbs. They are full spectrum, and just throw a ton of light into your shop.
Mine is a 400 watt Erikson Baylight. It has a chrome coil around the bulb, and it can be set on the ground, or hung from the ceiling. It's not cheap at $90 to $100 with bulb and ballast, but man, does it throw some serious light. I have one in my 2 car garage with a high ceiling. I turn it on when I'm spending a serious evening out there, or weekend tearing into something, and it lights the whole garage when hung from the ceiling. Then, I use incandescent or flourscent trouble lights under my cars to fill in the gaps.
For area lighting I have three twin 8' florescents. For car work I am looking for something bright that doesn't throw harsh shadows or lots of heat. And stays where I put it!
They actually generate a lot of heat. My garage has a high ceiling, maybe 14 to 16 ft, ,so the heat stays up. If you're working in the heat of the summer, it's not the best, but other than flourscents, there is not much alternative. Halogens throw a ton of heat too.
