I just wanted to share something that I learned while chemically stripping the paint off of the ol' 66 today. After spending an hour with a paintbrush, I had only stripped half of a door. I then decided to try using a spray bottle filled with the stripper and it worked like a charm. 2 hours later, I had stripped almost half of the truck before I ran out of chemical. Some of you more experienced builders out there may already know this trick, but I thought I would share it in case it would help somebody else trying to get rid of 39+ years of repaints.
I think that alot of it was already gone. I'm hoping to get the truck down to bare metal. But to answer your question, it did get some of it all stripped off but there is still some stubborn stuff left.
Once you strip down to bare metal, how do you prevent rust from immediately forming prior to applying primer? I intend to do the same with my hood, but at my pace (1/2 to 1 hour after the kids go to bed, tops), I might not get the metal protected in time.
Since I still have to sand it, I haven't put anything on it yet. Next week I'm going to pick up some epoxy to spray on each panel as I get it completely stripped. Then I can move on to primer and paint and all that good stuff.
Your best bet is to get something on the panel after you clean it off old paint. Bare metal starts to oxidize immediately. Even if its just a spray can that you will sand off later.
I would agree too...if its inside I would at the very least put a light to moderate dusting of primer on it....though you can see through it in parts, as long as the metal isnt open to the air its protected from moisture.

btw...I hope you dont gotta wetsand red....what a pain...stripping my replacement hood down to its original paint, fortunately that only one layer....the bed,,,,thats another story...3 layers of white and primers over the years including factory paint...what a pain.....tedious as heck...hehe
So what is a preferred stripper? Will ZIP STRIP do? I've had a full gallon of that sitting in my garage for 5 years for some project I forgot all about.
