I have a 2001 Excursion Limited which has an electrical short. The fuse which runs the compass/thermometer, cruise, turn signals, heated seats, 4X4, back up sensors, etc. kept blowing. I put a circuit breaker fuse in it and thought we could figure out which thing was causing it to blow by seeing which componenets were were using when it tripped. So far, we haven't been able to narrow it down. It can go a month or so without tripping the circuit breaker, and then it can do it off and on all day long for days at a time. Here lately, the circuit breaker gets too hot while trying to reset itself and I have to pull it out to let it cool down. Afterwards, I can usually put it back in and it will run for a while. I am getting pretty disgusted with it. I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem. I don't know which component might be causing the short. Any suggestions?

You have what is called an intermittent hard short. These are usually caused by a wire that has worn through the insulation and under certain circumstances will short out on the frame, or other grounded component.
My first suggestion is to take that circuit breaker out right now . If it is getting hot, due to multiple reset cycles most likely, it could easily cause a fire. If that circuit was meant for a C-B, it would have one. A fuse that blows and cuts all power to the circuit is what you want on a circuit that has those types of equipment.
Given the fact that everything appears to work when tested, at least that is what I am gathering from your post, seems like a wire is the cause. I would check the the heated seats first. An easy check is to unplug the seats and see if the fuse still blows. The other likely suspects would be the wire harness that runs to the 4x4 switch, and the back up sensors. Have you tried putting in a new fuse and checked each of these items for proper function?
I had the same problem with my 05 PSD. Dealer replaced wiring which was pinched under driver seat right rear mounting bracket near console causing short.
