Does that work for out-of-state cars also? I know they have to be inspected before you can register them, but hoping to get something just to drive it back here.
I think if you buy one out of state you can go to that state's DMV office and they can issue a "in-transit" tag. Or you can wait til you get it back here and get a temp tag but I'm certain you will still have to have it inspected. Check the "kansas vin rules" thread and I posted the name and number to fast back title here in town, they will know what to do.
It's been a few years since I bought one out of state, but I think you may be able to get a temp on an out of state vehicle, but will have to have it inspected when you apply for the title and regular registration. Also, if I purchased an out of state vehicle from an individual, I would just make up an "in transit" sign and drive it home. I would want the bill of sale and signed over title from the other state and some form of proof of insurance with me. I doubt you would have much hassle then from law enforcement.
I talked to a friend of mine, and he said pretty much what you said. Signed title, bill of sale, and proof of insurance. The guy I bought the car from is going to leave the old plates on it for me. Was also going to mail me the title Monday, if it gets here in time I might swing by the tag office and get a temp plate just to get it home. It still has to be inspected by HWY Patrol.
In case anyone's wondering....eBay item 4568291586. I got tired of running small cars to Santa Fe and Chihuahua, decided to get a big old boat for those long trips. Heck with gas mileage. Gotta run down and get it this weekend. Anyone up for a road trip?
I have it in the shop, they replaced the power steering box and a bent rocker arm. Also putting in a new wiper delay switch and a few other small things, then I'll see if she's ready for the road. Wife's friend in Chihuahua does body work, so will try to run it down there over Xmas and get some of that fixed. I've got a couple things to do to it myself....it has the original tiny driver's side mirror and a plastic aftermarket job on the passenger door. I want to install larger, matched, mirrors, just got to find some I like, and adjust the door latches so you don't have to slam them.

Some states don't issue transit tags - Maryland is one .... But then Maryland doesn't do a lot of things besides tax everything that moves!
Oops...forgot to mention. I've already got the car here, drove it up the weekend before Labor Day. Seller left his plates on it, they're good through this month, so I got insurance on it and away we went. I would have it tagged here already but the bill of sale he sent me did not have a purchase price, and, of course, KS has to know how much you paid for it, so he's sending me a new one.
