If you saw my other post you know I had a rough couple of weeks with my engine. During all that my heater core also went. Has anyone ever swapped one before? The Haynes manual says you have to take bsaically the whole dash out, yet I've talked to a few mechanics who say it should come out easier, almost like a cartridge? Can anyone help here?

You don't have to take the dash out but you do have to remove to housing under/behind the dash. Inside remove the control door, resistor cables and glove box. In the engine compartment remove the heater hoses (after draining the coolant), blower wires and finally the nuts on the housing studs sticking through the firewall (one is behind the engine/transmission. Then work (wrestle) the housing out from under the dash. You can search the tech articles because there is one for heater core replacement which will be more detailed than my general outline here. Also the Haynes manual is pretty good. I replaced mine last year and wish it was as simple as a cartridge removal. Hope this helps get you started.
Does yours have A/C? If not, you only have the blower motor wires, heater hoses, 3 nuts on the firewall, 2 screws to remove the cables, and waaalllaaa. You just have to manuver it out from under the dash. then remove 4 to 6 screws and remove the heater core from the housing.
TIP- try to remove as much of the anti-freeze from the heater box as possible. This will eliminate most of the smell and film that gets on the windshield.
