Unhappy Speedo Died!

The speedometer in my 2000 Ranger quit working the other day. (3.0 & 5spd manuel) Check engine light came on soon after. I haven't had time to get under it to take a good look, but a quick glance showed no speedo cable anywhere.
What do I need to look for...is it electronic controlled? Are there any easy ways to check the engine codes also? (Maybe you can direct me to some forums that dealt with these issues.)

Thanks...RB

There is a speed sensor in the top (slightly to the driver's side) of the rear differential. Easy to replace, and about $28 from Ford. Normally the ABS light will come on when this sensor goes out.....

Thanks...I'll check it out tomorrow. (Monday) The ABS light did come on, now that you mention it!

Autozone is the easiest way to get codes checked on a 2000 model. Otherwise, either a good shop, a bad guess, or even worse, a stealership.

Thanks for the tip...I've had only minor problems with the truck since I've had it...all which have been fixed through this forum! (Haven't needed to run codes until now!)
