Air filter ????

Ok, I will admit it, I am a PSD guy, but the parents have an IDI, '93 turbo.

what are you running for air filters. I really would like to make one like on both my PSD's using an open element filter. the napa 6637. here is a pic for those that don't know what it looks like.

anyone else use an open element, and how did you do it???? I have some good idea's on how I am gunna do it, just would like some pics, get a few idea's on what works and what doesnt.

unless the stock box flows good enough, and seals great. but on the PSD's the stock box SUCKS. and leaks. then I will just leave it.

and it won't be stock for very long, keep that in mind.

I have a 94 turbo motor in my 86. The stock filter box from ATS is cast aluminum which does a good job of sealing.
I run a Purolator air filter, but I make up for the added restriction by making an air scoop behind the grill to give ram air to the filter.
Here is a picture of the front with the grill removed.

With the bugs and all that I am scooping up I change the filter every 5000 miles.
You do have to unhook the scoop when you are running in snow, rain and the rest do not bother it.

I used to run a K&N but I found it was not a good filter for the dusty conditions I am usually in. I do excavation work and see more dust in a day than lots of people see in a year.

Yea. I knew you had a ram air set-up. seen some other post of it, sweet stacks too. great idea, but I think dad will spring for an open element before a ram air. and we get alot of snow in the winter, and its a farm truck, so I think it will be in some crappy conditions alot that will warrant the removal of the ram air, like you said for rain, snow etc.

Rain and freezing rain are no problem.
Snow is the only time I unhook it.
I might not even have to do that, but since I plow snow I do kick a bunch up with the blade.

The only bad thing I see about an open element filter without ram air is the hot under hood air is what it will be sucking up.

I liked the Y pipe you have on your stacks.
It is almost exactly the same as the one I made for mine except the flat metal plate.
Was that a premade unit or did you make it?
I cut up two 90 degree ells and welded them back together so it had three three inch openings to make mine. Several people around here asked how I did it because they had used Tee's which did not balance the exhaust very well and had too much back pressure.

I had it build, my buddie works at a body shop and they did my exhaust. I mounted the stacks, and he just had to bend the pipe and weld it. so it was a fabed up thing.
