I HAVE AN 89 B2 2.9L AUTO 4x4 AND IT MAKES A KNOCKING NOISE THAT SOUNDS PRETTY BAD. IT HAPPENS AFTER THE CAR IS WARMED UP. WHEN THE CAR IS IN PARK AND ENGINE IS REVED IT KNOCKS. WHEN THE CAR IS DRIVING AND THERE IS A VERY LITTLE AMOUNT OF THROTTLE(CRUSING) APPLIED IT WILL KNOCK. NOW HERE IS THE WEIRD PART, WHEN I UNPLUG THE INLINE SPOUT CONNECTOR THE NOISE WILL NOT RETURN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. ONCE THE INLINE SPOUT CONNECTOR IS PLUGED BACK IN ALL KNOCKING PROBLEMS RETURN. I HAVE REPLACED THE HEADS, LIFTERS,DIST., CAP, ROTOR, SPK PLGS& WIRES, TWICE, TH. POS. SENSOR, ENG TEMP SENSOR, FUEL INJECTORS, FUEL PRESSURE REG, FUEL PUMP. I BOUGHT THE CAR WITH A CRAKCED HEAD AND HAD A REPAIR SHOP DO THE WORK. I BOUGHT THE HEADS FROM SACREMENTO MOTOR WORKS AND WERE SOLD NEW AND COMPLETE. I NOTICED THE NOISE AFTER THE HEADS WERE INSTALLED I HAVE REPLACED ALL THE PARTS LISTED TO TRY AND CORRECT THE KNOCK IF ANY ONE CAN HELP ME IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS!!!
Since you bought it with a cracked head, a low end knock would sounds like rod bearings to me. When the heads crack, coolant gets in the oil and ends up trashing the bearings.
hey ken00 thanks for the response. the crack was on the side of the head near the spark plugs. when i seew the old heads there was a little coolant and oil built up but the coolant would leak primarly out side the engine. i guess the sound is more like something is rattling inside the engine. any ideas why it will not make the noise when the inline spout connecter is removed? thanks for your help!!!
A clicking/clattering noise could be lifter noise which is very common on the 2.9. This is a top end noise.
A knock or thumping type noise would sounds more like lower end bearings, again something that gets damaged when the head(s) crack.
Pinging can be caused by to much spark advance, which should stop with the spout remove, have you checked the base ignition timing. Running 93 octane would also help reduce spark knock(pinging).
