I have a 1999 Expy 4.6 with 115K miles on it. When I go to start the truck it just clicks from under the hood. It'll crank after I turn the key anywhere from 15 - 50 times. It does this hot/cold. Also, after turning it from the on to start position about 5 or 6 times, the doors lock and then unlock. I'm assuming that this is just a programming issue and not related to the start problem but I'm not sure. I will be sure to check the connections to the starter and probably replace the starter solenoid before replacing the starter. I hear the relay engaging when I turn the key to the on position and disengaging when I turn it off so I pretty much ruled that out. Is there any steps I may be missing before replacing the starter?
Start by having someone in the truck with foot on brake for safety even though it is an automatic and remove the cover over the solonoid. Passenger side next to battery. Get a large screwdriver or wrench etc... and jump the two large terminals on the solonoid. It will spark but no reason to freak. If the starter turns then it is the contacts in the solonoid. Try a few times to make sure. The starter is a pain on this truck compared to a 20 dollar solonoid that is out in the open. Let us know what happens.
Tried that. It will only click then also. Checked and cleaned all wires connected to the starter. Checked battery cable, no. 21 fuse, and relay and all are good. Is there anything that I'm forgetting to check before I replace this starter?
Man sounds like you did you homework. Maybe Ohm out the starter and see if the windings are open. Or see if there is any voltage drop while trying to start but I think you would have noticed a starter pulling 200 amps and not turning, LOL. Let us know how the starter goes if you change it, whenever I am under my truck I always look at items and wonder when I will be changing it. As a last thought I wonder if there is a rebuild kit available to consumers but just guessing with todays disposable parts I anm leaning torwards no. Good Luck.
