Hey guys, my first post here, I've been lucky to not have any problems, but need some help now. I have a 99 F150, 5.4, 4x4, 110,000 miles. I've had this truck for about 15 months now with no major issues. Recently, there has been a handful of occasions (maybe 5 in 2 months) where I would start the engine and it would bog down and die right away. The first couple of times it did it was the morning after a really strong storm and I figured some water got under the hood somehow or something like and was causing a problem. After revving the engine at about 2K rpm for 20 seconds or so, the truck ran awesome and I didn't have anymore problems. This afternoon I went out and the same thing happened and I fixed it the same way. Went to hit golf *****, got ready to leave the range and no matter how long I revved the engine it still died when I let off the gas. It didn't rain very hard today but it is really humid, as it was the other mornings this has happened. THis is my first vehicle that is computer controlled so I'm still learning, my first two cars were a 65 and 68 mustang on which i learned to work, but gave me no experience on all this electronic stuff. Any suggestions you guys could give me would be awesome. just to note, I'm getting pretty good gas mileage, I get about 15 in normal mixed driving and about 17 if I'm careful on the highway, and its a relatively new air and fuel filter, but I haven't done much else to the truck.

 

Sounds like the classic idle air control (IAC) valve problem. The IAC is on the back of the throttle body, looks like a cylinder with an electric connection. You can try cleaning it out, but usually have to replace it.
