Join the club. Washington DC has been having those for years. Old cities, old infrastructure. If I remember correctly, some of the old water pipes either in DC or New york are wood and a few still in service. Hollowed out logs.
Every winter and spring in New York City there are incidences of transformer fires, Manhole explosions and couple of times people were electrocuted when they stepped on a manhole cover. Water main pipes burst and cause sink holes at intersections. Pot holes galore. One overpass near here was near collapse. They've torn it down and are replacing it now. Something was really wrong with that one. It was over the thru-way (toll road) and all the overpasses were built around the same time. The overpasses next to it are fine. On this one the concrete in the posts supporting it crumbled away.
sierraben, you'd be right that infrastructure here in the Boston area is rough. As 76supercab2 noted, we've also had a rash of explosions, 'hot' man hole covers, etc.
Bridges in particular are in dire straits. Sure glad the country spent > $15 billion - BILLION - for a couple miles of buried road (with lots of structure problems and leaks)and a new bridge - an excellent example of greed, corruption, and a total lack of any accountability. Local, state, and federal gov'ts make the likes of Enron, WorldCom etc look like small change - they are easily the most inefficient organizations in the country. [Think about it - $15 billion, for a couple of miles of road that will do little to actually improve traffic, does nothing for conservation, public transport, new enery sources, etc. . .]

The company I work for actually kept an office open in the Boston area, because of the big hole. As soon as the last yard of concrete was poured, we closed it....
