Battery not being charged

First off, I'm thrilled to have found this forum. So much great information! Thanks to the admin who maintains the site.

So, we bought a pre-owned Excursion 7.3 PSD 4x4 3 days ago. The built year is 2001. It has about 54K miles on it. Last night while I was driving to a friend's place, all the gauges went dead; including the radio, compass. Everything. Luckily, the diesel was still running so it took me to my destination.

I couldn't start the car afterward. My friend gave it a jump. It ran well...for 3 miles, and the symptoms re-appeared. I did manage to get home though.

Question to you experts out there:
1. Is it the alternator? How can I tell if an alternator has gone bad?
2. Is it the fusible link? Where are those fusible links located? I openned the hood this morning and decided to write this message in this forum.
3. Is there anything else to consider?

Thanks again.

It sounds like the batteries are toast. Of course, you'll want to make sure that the alternator is good.

You can pull the alternator and have it bench tested at your local auto parts store. Usually for free.

Welcome to FTE!

Oh...if you like, you can put a multimeter across the battery terminals while the engine is running to see if there is charge going to the batteries. You'll have to increase the RPMs to see if the volts increase. Should be about 14 +/- at around 2500 RPM.

Thanks Ken. I will certainly do that when I get home tonight.

This is a great forum. I browsed through most the threads and found much good information. Once again, thanks for the admin/s who maintains the site and those who contribute to the forum.

OK, so I changed the battery, and my EX still drained the battery. I changed the alternator. At idle, the only one battery is charged, at about 12.7-12.9V. As we increase the RPM, both batteris are charged. Is that normal?

Thanks.
