I am a new member here but not new to Ford. I have a 72 F-100 with a 289 from a 67 cougar. The trans is a truck C4 with a short shaft and double driveshafts. The C6 I have came from a E350 box truck. I have the driveshaft also out of this truck but not the pinion yoke. My question is on the pinion yoke. What vehicles used the 3.625 u-joint? I need to find a 28 spline yoke with this size joint. I don't want to spend a fortune for a racing one. I believe I can have the driveshaft cut and balanced with no problem. The 289 I have is pretty torqued up but not enough to break a yoke is it? Any replies will be much appreciated.
I did a C6 swap in my 67. If you have the standard tunnel instead of the high tunnel floor board it will be a tight fit. Not sure on the yoke issue. I have two yokes for the C6 one has a longer input shaft than the other and appeared to be skinner. I needed the shorter one. If that is the one you need I have it somewhere in my gargage and can send it to you. PM if that is the one you are looking for.
I would suggest you double check the C6 bolt pattern.... The only one I can think of that will work for your application to the back of the 289 would have to come from a Cleveland powered vehicle. The C6 will also eat up a lot of your 289 available power.
The C6 doner had a 300 inline 6. The bolt pattern appears to be the same. A guy from a local Ford dealer said that I might have to change the plate between the engine and trans. As for the power loss, I haven't bought my ring and pinion yet but I have a mini spool already. Should I drop down to 4:11s or 3:70s. I don't care about the mileage I only drive 3 miles to and from work. When I do take longer trips I am pulling a trailer with a demolition car on it.
71100, Is your rear u joint yoke 3.625? I could probably find a e-van or truck that had factrory C6 maybe the all used them. I want to get rid of the double driveshafts. Yes I do have the 6 bolt 289. I am always looking for another 289/C6 setup for racing. Both are indestructable in a crown vic with a 9 inch.
If you're talking about the yoke on the rear gear, there are only two different u-joints. One is square (measurement-wise cap to cap), the other is narrower on one side. All you need to do to adapt it is use the correct u-joint.
Thanks guys you have been very helpfull. I'm glad I signed up. I'm gonna plug my site again. www.blackwindracing.com Check it out. A 67-72 Ford kills chevrolet rust buckets in the derby? Maybe I will put one to the test.
I bought a set of 3:70s instead of the 4:11 for my driver truck. The 4:11 will go in my derby car/truck. The C6 is at a techs house getting a workover and a shift kit. Any suggestions on a shifter? I want it to look decent without butchering the floor.

I installed a floor shifter out of a 69 Mustang in my 63 truck. I raised it up with spacers for trans clearance and sheet-metaled it in. It works great and has been in there for 20 years.
Any pictures of the Mustang floor shifter? I'm converting my '70 F250 from a np435 to a c6 and want to stay with a floor shifter, but want it to look like it matches the truck.
I don't have the ability to post pics yet (no digital camera, no scanner).
I used spacers to raise the shifter up for trans clearance and the riveted in aluminum from the bottom of the body of the shifter to the floor. It has been in the truck for 20 years with no problems.
I got some of of my stuff in. Gears, bearings, brake parts, etc. I found a good used forged yoke on ebay for the pinion. The trans isn't done yet so I can't get my driveshaft cut down yet. (It's from the E-350 that donated the trans) Work has been keeping me so busy. I have parts everywhere but on the truck! Well I did get the new tires installed on the rims.
I thought about buying a B&M shifter I like the style of it. I figure if I spend the price of a new truck payment on parts each month, "Bubba" will live again!
