I recently ordered a set off hedman long tube headers to put on my 95 ford f150 (5.0 EFI) I ordered a weld on oxygen bung to relocate the oxygen sensor from my first catalytic converter into one of my headers.(This was my first problem) My only problem now is after inspecting my stock exhaust i saw that there is a tube the connects into the top of the catalytic converter. My first question is, is this tube the egr valve tube or what? Secondly how can i put on this set of headers and bypass that or what do i have to do in order to reconnect that piece to my headers? I would really like to put these headers on soon so i can finish the rest of my exhaust. Please reply if you know what i can do. Thanks.
I'd also like to know what the egr does? thanks again
Trace that tube up. It should go to the air pump that is driven with the belt on front of the motor. If that is where it goes, you can just leave it disconnected under the truck. It will just blow air out.
The egr valve is mounted on the intake throttle body. It also may have a tube going to the exhaust, so it may be the one you are talking about(I am not sure). The egr valve will be a round diaphram looking thing. What it does is inject exhaust gas into the intake manifold. The exhaust gas is already burnt, so it's considered an inert gas and does nothing but take up space in the air/fuel mixture. It's for emissions for the most part.
The problem is if you disconnect it, you may get a check engine light. Even if you leave the valve connected, but just disconnect the exhaust line, it will probably set the light since the computer monitors the egr system. You can try it and see what happens. You could also get another bung and try to hook the line up if you need it.
