Just replaced my old 400 in my '78 F150 with a 460 using an trans-dapt kit. I'm looking at hedman husler (85650) headers which are fender exit. Has anyone else had any experience with this install? I'm concerned about the exhaust routing as the fuel tanks are along the drivers side. Also any muffler suggestions would be welcome. Thanks
From what ive gathered its worth it to reach for your wallet and pay up for thorley
tri-y's, at least thats what im gettin. on my truck i plan on 2.5" duals with two magnaflows, ivan said that he's happy with his 6" round magnaflows, not sure what size pipe he has, but he said theyre very free flowin compared to the chambered mufflers, i'm getting a muffler instead of glasspacks because ive been told glasspacks wear out fairly fast.
When it comes to headers, you get what you pay for. I have experience with both the L&L fenderwell and L&L chassis exit headers. For the money (very expensive), you do get a great header. Many years and miles and no leaks on either, although the chassis exit are a pain to plumb. For some reason, L&L figured that they had to point the driver's side collector right at the oil pan and 2 inches away from it. Lots of room for driveshaft, so ???.
As far as the fenderwell exits go, as long as you're not running huge tires, you'll be fine....large tires tend to hit the headers during sharp turns.
Yeah, as Lead_Foot said, go with a quality chambered muffler. My preference is anything but a Flowmaster (wouldn't hurt my feelings to never hear another vehicle with them); something like a Magnaflow or Dynomax.
I bought a set of Hooker Supercomp longtubes-uncoated (ebay) and sent them to Nitro Plate to be coated ($225). Plan to hook them up to a 2 1/2" Y-pipe, a hi-flow cat and then out a s.i/d.o. flowmaster. I'll try to post pictures when it's done. It's going on a 94 f150 5.0. Hope they get me some good low end towing grunt. Might do some gears too.
