I have a 94 f-150 300 six, no cats , msd 6a, and about 151,000 miles on her, tough ones too its a service truck. getting a lot of valve noise sounds like a diesel on start up. and my timing is all over the place so, my plan new timing set, cam, flow the head, and somthing other than k&n's ( lets hide the air filter behind the radiator over flow resivoir and let the engine breath heated air!) FIPK...wow must of had a dodge engineer on that project..mabye a costom fresh air intake.
the advise i seek is i need a good solid upgraded cam, and how far should i go with the head work stage 1 ?...ect, advise on rockers and lifters. im going to port match the intake side also. exh. is 3" no cat. motor does not use a drop of oil. Thanks.
p.s. i am a sheetmetal fabricator by trade and a mechanic by choice i have a lot at my disposal, my boss took 3rd in the nation in his comp. dragster his shop is amazing! ill have pics of the custom fresh air intake fabrication.
Can't help with advice on the cam, lifters, ect. But, I would suggest that the valve noise at startup is likely the oil filter. Some oil filters do not have effective drain back valves and the oil from the upper block areas will drain back through that valve into the oil pan. It may be worth the cost of a good filter just to find out if that is the problem. It has been reported in these forums that the Motorcraft, NAPA Gold, and Wix filters have very good anti-drainback valves. If the oil filter fixes you noise problem, it is a cost affective solution and are at least worth trying..
