Just had my A/C condensor and grill replaced due to "massive rocks" in my face from a crazy driver who passed me on the right gravel shoulder of a highway. Due to his "spiing out" and crashing, his insurance paid for it all.
I ordered a grill/bug guard from Cabella's for $20.00 (same as many others out there)., but choose instead to try silver/metal window screen material behind the grill. The purchased bug cover covers the entirte front and covers the Ford emblem and looks like it may "chatter" on windy days????
I removed the entire front grill assembly in 2 minutes (4 scres and 4 spring clips) and worked on it upside down on my work bench.
I bought a roll of aluminum/silver window screen and rough cut it to fit and so I could bend it over the interior edges. I then made small slits with a razor and zipp-stripped it all around and through the middle of the grill.
From the front you can not see it and it looks stock from the distance. Have not had many bugs yet, but it stays put and has not broken free of the zip strips at 90mph.
I was concerned with bugs and rocks hitting the front and nothing there to protect it. My Excursion has a different grill than the P-U trucks. I have a grill througout the entire front, where as the P-Up's have three chrome bars as a grill... really nothing at all!!!
Anything hitting your grill (bugs or rocks) will damage the fins and possibly the AC lines that it protects and air cools.
Any other ideas.. would love to see pics of and hear of them.
Beach,
I'm trying to put my photos in my gallery but my connection from home is a land line and the whole photo will not upload. I can try to email you my photos if you like.

Pics are in my gallery...finally. Kind of a before and after deal. I have had no additional damage done to the condenser since I put the guard on. I have used it towing and in all types of weather (112 F) with no problems at all. Put one a '01 Super Duty but I had to mount it behind the vertical supports because of the grille design.
