I have a 96 Bronce 5.0L. For the past month or two it occassionally won't start. I turn the key on and off and it would fire right up. Then it started to die while driving. It's a 5spd so if the trans was engaged it would immediately kick start right back up. Lately though it has been taking more than 1 or 2 tries to start it back up. When it is not starting the tach is dead, indicating a problem in the ignition rather than fuel. No codes are registering. I replaced the ignition module, ignition switch and coil. Since it usually fires right up after 1st or 2nd try, it is very difficult to troubleshoot. The problem comes and goes at will and I have just been throwing parts at it hoping to get lucky. Could it be distributor? Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should try next or how I could test for the problem when it is starting just fine?
This is just a shot in the dark, but it may be worth it......?????
I would check all the terminals and points of contact from the battery to ground (engine & body). Make sure they are clean and tight, and make sure that the terminating hardware is attached to the lead(s) tightly. You may as well also check the positive side while your at it.
I have seen many intermittent no start/electrical problems caused by neglected battery connections.
Ignition module maybe? Seems in the latter year fords that I own, Every one that had that symptom ended up being bad module. If yours ends up being the case, only replace it with ford part equivelent. I have tried third party brand and none last as long as FoMoCo. JMHO.
