Pitman arm

I have a 73 F-100. I am trying to get the pitman arm off so I can overhaul the steering gear box. The large puller I rented is not wide enough to fit. Any ideas? Any info on pulling a pitman arm is appreciated.

Yellow, if you have a torch heat 2 spots on the pitman arm, opposite sides of each other. Don't get it red hot but make it fairly toasty being careful not to heat the sector shaft or box to much. The arm will pop right off of there.

Will a store bought propane torch work? Is it normal not to have any clearance between the arm and box? You probably couldn't place the Ace of spades between them.

A small propane torch may work, I haven't used one but if it can provide enough heat to expand the arm slightly it'll break free.. If you haven't picked one up already go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get a MAP torch. They look just like the propane torches but use a yellow bottle that has a gas mix which produces a lot more heat. I don't think it's normal for the pitman arm to be up that high on the shaft. Usually there's a fair gap between the box and the arm.
