I've been kickin' around the idea of getting a late 70's Ford F-250. These truck's are bitchin'. Unfortunatelly I don't know much about them. One question I've got involves the transfer cases and front driveshafts on some of these trucks. Just from driving around and looking at these trucks, I've noticed that some of them have t-cases and front driveshafts that seem to hang down lower than the frame why others have them tucked up nice and high and out of site. What's the deal. I don't like the way the former trucks look, but I don't know which year/model trucks look like this and why.
the trucks with looong front d-shafts that hang down have divorced transfer cases. (means there is a d-shaft between the tranny and t-case) most of the first 4wd's had the divorced t-cse setup. on our year trucks 73-77.5 f-250's had a divorced t-case and the long front driveshaft. theses trucks are commonly called hiboys. All f-150's from 73-79 and f-250's and 350's from 77.5-79 had the married t-case with the shorter front driveshaft
Thanks for the reply. Are there any pro's/con's to each setup? Also, I know it was just a nickname, but do the early 77's model "highboys" actually sit any higher than the later model 77's??? I'm a fan of the 77's in particular, and would have liked to have been a member of the highboy club, but I really don't care for that t-case/driveshaft look. And yet I still have some great mystical longing to own a highboy. Decisions,,,decisions. Can the divorced t-case be changed over to a married t-case???
all the 73-77.5's sit higher than the 77.5-79 because the front springs have an arch to them, it has 4 inch rear blocks and heavily arched rear springs that are only 2.5 inches or so wide. I have found they sit about 2 inches higher than the 78-79's. The front 4 inch lift springs for the highboy's are the same as the 6 inch lift springs for the front of my 79. And both trucks sit the same with the springs.
as for converting to a married t-case, that would be alot of work....finding the new t-case...transmission, the adapter, a high pinion front axle, rear driveshaft must be lengthened, front must be shortened. new shifter linkage...etc too much work in my opinion. jus use what ya got.
