Transmission Whine

i hear a whine whenever i start off from a stop or when the tranny is in 1st gear only, it immediately goes away after it shifts into 2nd...is this normal? do they all make this sound? newbie hear-looks like a wonderful site by the way....

Might get better response if you post which truck and tranny you have.

Definite big problem... better swap it out with my 85!

I'm sure someone with an '05 will pipe up. Another thought is to go to the dealer - I'd think they would warranty check it.

This is a pretty common problem on Chevrolet trucks and vans with the 4L80E transmission (TH400 w/overdrive). First gear howls like a banshee, second gear not as bad and third it's gone.

I have replaced NUMEROUS output carriers/sun gears in these transmissions due to improper machining marks on the gears. I can't vouch for Ford, but it sounds to me that you have a similar problem on your hands, although with the Chevys, it's not a big deal, just noisy. Have your dealer check it out, man!!
