Did the bulbs burn out or is the lens broken? Never done it yet, but if its not obvious as in a couple of screws from the outside, then pull the interior panels or access doors and then there's probably a fasteners on the inside.

Step 1: Open the entire tailgate.
Step 2: You will see that there are two screws holding in the light (The screws aren't inside the vehicle but rather in the opening left by the hatch)
Step 3: Unscrew the 2 screws and the light comes away from the vehicle.
Step 4: Disconnect the wiring.
Step 5: Replace bulb or whatever else you want to do.
