I have a 1988 bronco II with 2.9L FI and overdrive automatic. The other day I drove about 50 miles down the interstate, turned the truck off and three days later when I got back on the interstate, I shifted the transmission into overdrive but it would only shift through the first three gears -no overdrive.
I have been told that there is a small electrical switch that allows the torque convertor to lock up and this switch may have gone bad. I was not towing anything or otherwise tasking the transmission in any way. This transmission was re-built about 1.5 yr ago and has been functioning fine since.
On an '88, both the 3-4 shift and the torque converter lockup clutch are supposed to be electronically controlled by the EEC-IV computer ('87 and earlier A4LD had a vacuum controlled 3-4 shift). 1st thing I'd do is pull codes from the computer. Then get a wiring diagram and check the 3-4 shift and TCC lockup control circuits.
