Smile 3 on the tree

Does anyone have a lot of experience with 3 speed on the column issues? I am looking at a 60 f-100 that the owner says it pops out of second. I am wondering it this is more likely to be a transmission issue, or a linkage issue. I used to own motorcycles that if you didn't have the linkage adjusted right would pop out of gear. Either way I don't think the issue is too bad. I can either replace all the linkage for the column shift or rebuild the transmission.

Thanks,

usually, popping out of a gear means bad synchro rings. It won't hold it in place. You should check all the bushings on the column and rods anyway. Put it in the gear you mention and crawl under the truck ( engine off! ) and see if you can push the lever back any. The old Ford 3 speeds were known for bad synchros in 2nd. I.m leaning towards that, not the column.

I think it is an issue inside the gear box, I can't see anything on my linkage that "holds it" in the selected gear.
Maybe there is a detent pin inside for each selection.

I had a 1971 F100 with rusted out front cab supports. The cab dropped until the shift tube was binding on the steering column. Sometimes when going around a corner, there was enough drag to move the shifter and pop the transmission out of gear.

That takes me back..............I had a 69 F-250 with an automatic that the cab mounts were rusted out on and would screw up the shift linkage. I didn't have the resources at the time to fix it so I would jack up the cab and place a 2x4 block between the cab and the frame. It was a fairly good band-aid

Most of the three on the trees that I've ever had experience with would not kcick out of gear (that sounds like a tranny prob) but would lock up occasionally and you would have to pull over and pop the hood and smack the linkage with a rock to get them to free up

I had a 64 Econline that you had to almost release the shifter in between first and second, and then gently push it up into second. If you tried to force it it would jam, and I kept a 14" crescent behind the seat so I could crawl under the truck and click the first and second levers to get it unstuck. I called it my anti-theft system. Strangely enough that is why I am now looking for another truck with a 3 on the tree. Fond memories, of a good ole' truck.

LOL, Yea fond memories until your out in the rain with your trusty crescent wrench laying in a mud puddle. I had a 58 chevy truck that was the same way also. The funny thing about it is that about $10 worth of shift bushings would have taken care of the whole problem.

I knew someone would know that on sunny days you shift as if you were GOD, and on rainy ones, like it is you first day driving!!! Grinding off enough metal to make a hammer every mile, and spending a good part of the day on your back under your truck in an intersection.
