Steering box

Yeah, last night i was driving home from a volleyball game and by the time i made it home i had barely any power steering. I checked the lines from the power steering pump to the box and they were tight, but when i looked under the truck the frame all the way back to the radius arm brackets had a nice coat of power steering fluid on it. The truck is a 79 f-150 4x4 w/ 33's. I was wondering if there is a foolproof way of knowing what it may be, and how hard it will be to put on a new power sttering box. and if that's the case, what does something like that cost roughly. any help would be awesome. thanks

Back up there... The first thing you need to do is eyeball work to determine where the leak is. It doesn't sound like it sprayed the whole engine compartment so you should be able to see where it is coming from. You can use brake cleaner to clean off fluid. You can also put more fluid in and see where it is coming from with the engine running, just be carefull!

I suspect you popped a hose or fitting to get that much fluid all at once.

Yeah... all the hoses are tight, and it leaks a few drips even when it's not running. None of the hoses are wet with fluid, nor the top of the steering box, just underneath it all. When it's not running, it drips from the bottom of the steering box down onto the pitman arm, and then runs down to the point that the pitman arm and first tie rod connect, and then it drips to the ground. I'm wondering if there is a seal on the bottom of the gear box by the pitman arm that could be leaking, and how hard it is to replace.

thanks
