Transfer Case Fluid Change

Heys Guys/Gals,

Have any of you ever changed the Transfer Case Fluid in your V-10 4x4..I have an 02 Ex 4x4...I want to change the fluid in the Transfer Case.

I crawled under it today and it looks very easy...

I think all you have to do is loosen the drain plug..ie the lower plug..let the Mercon ATF drain out...Tighten it back up..Open the filler plug..ie the top one and pump in new Mercon ATF...It looks like from my manual it takes 2 quarts.

If I am missing something here...Plz let me know as I will be doing this tomm pm sometime...

Should the Transfer Case be warmed up?? Or does it matter in the 90 degree heat we have here in KY?

Thanks,

Big Rig

make sure the fill plug opens first. sometimes they will freeze solid and you won't be able to re fill them.

You got it, Big Rig - get after it

And, yes, 2 quarts of synthetic (Mercon ATF or Mobil1 or compatible)

No need to let it warm-up.

Big Rig,
If you can think about it, let us know the condition of the fluid, will ya?

I'm thinking it's probably going to be just a bit cloudy, not as bad as you expect. Reason is: I changed mine about 15K ago and it looked real good - had about 40K on it. I haven't read nor heard of any that's "dirty" with normal driving.

Guys,

I changed it..real easy with the pump I bought at auto zone for $4.00..The pump screws onto the quart container and all you have to do is pump away and fill the Transfer Case until it starts running out the fill hole. I put in just over 2 quarts..Maybe about 2.25 quarts with some waste factored in.

The condition was not bad at all. It was just like you said, just a bit cloudy but still red. I have 27,756 on it. Don't use it often and I just felt better about doing it. So easy I couldn't believe it..

It cost me with the pump $11.63.

While I had about 3/4 of a quart of Mercon left, I decided to take out 3/4 qt of Power Steering fluid out of the filler and fill it with fresh mercon. The PS Fluid looked good as well..

Thanks for the help once again...Man I love this Forum...You all are GREAT..
