i just bought a new canoe and realized why i should have gotten a long bed (oh well), i have a 04 f250 ext cab short bed and am wondering if anyone with a similer set up has any ideas for treckin around with a canoe
i have scene a couple of different over the cab type -basically just dense foam pads and straps front and aft, and the thule's but those seem more like they are for suv's and cars
any suggestions/ideas/horror stories on what not to do would be appreciated
I can tell you that the Thule and Yakima racks are made specifically for hauling toys such as canoes, kayaks, bikes, etc. They make racks that will fit on top of our trucks and even some configurations for putting a rack across the bed. Find a local dealer, they should be able to get you set up really easily. If you dont know who would be a dealer in your local area, check out the local bike shop, they can at the very least point you in the right direction.
1) Removable ladder racks, always a good idea because you never know when you'll need to move a ladder and they work great for canoes.
2) If you are at all handy you can make a box frame that will sit in the bed and be held down by cargo straps. I had a friend make one that held a canoe and 2 windsurfers that had a lockable storage area on the bottom for the life vests etc. He varnished it all up and it looked awesome. When not in use,he held it in the basement to store the canoes and windsurfers on.
3) There are canoe carriers that fit into a 2" reciever. (Look at Cabela's) They function similar to a bike rack but extend out several feet. The canoe lies in the bed straight in and overhangs onto the rack.
Yes look to the construction industry for ideas they all have some amazing racks to haul a number of different items.
Also a hang glider rack, I used to fly and those racks will haul very long itmes.
I load my canoe in my short bed. The canoe is a 16' old towne. I baught one of those extenders mean for hauling lumber and such. The one I have is adjustable in height and length. It goes into the reciever of the hitch. It works great. I put soem ratcheting hold downs and away I go. It is very secure. The extender cost me $125
I fabbed up a headache rack that is higher than the cab which holds the rear of the canoe. The front is supported by a fabbed up mount that slides in the front hidden hitch. Makes for a hell of a sun visor.
nice thanks for the input guys, bfr250sd thats great i need to start using google and ditch msn for searches, once again fte members providing the good info
Maxey: I've got a 17' Wenonah I carry with my short bed Super Cab and have found the truck rack made by Silver Creek, Box 246, Mt. Iron, MN 55768; www.canoegear.com (1-800-937-8881/1-218-735-8719); used in conjunction with a Yakima cab rack to work extremely well. I've taken it to the Boundry Waters in MN from Ohio and experienced no problems whatsoever. I recommend this set-up highly.
