Ever since I've owned my 2001 Expy, there has been a constant squeaking noise, that sounds like it's coming from my front left wheel. It sounds like a thin wire rubbing on the rotor, it's real weird and very annoying. I've already replaced the ball joints on that side and the brakes are new, any thoughts?
Possibly a wheel bearing, especially if its dry....does it do it all the time or during specific movement? Does it do it if your moving slow or fast or either? If during slow movement, take the wheel off and spin the hub by hand to try to trace it.
Do you have those brake pads with the "crickets" on them? The one that let you know when the pads are low, they may be out of adjustment?
It mainly does it at slow speeds, up to around 30 mph. The brakes are about 3 months old and it's been making this noise from the get go. If it is dry can I just pack some more grease in there I guess, and how hard is is to do? I'm thinking about just replacing the wheel bearings all around, is this something I can do with regular tools or do I need special tools.
I'm convinced that the stock mechanics on newer vehicles suck ***. Too bad, I love my Expo
Well, on a 4x4 I can't help ya with disassembly....you'll have to snag a Haynes manual (about $15 at Autozone) ....or maybe Monsta will chime in here and enlighten us?
Packing a bearing is easy, if its good! You can buy one of those bearing packers that looks like a plastic funnel with a grease fitting, I have one, works well. But you'll need to check the "race" for nicks and that the bearing isn't loose (worn). The Haynes book or equivelant will be helpful on that.
