I just got this 72 F100 short bed. The previous owner replaced the speedo cable, but he didn't put a gear on the trans end. How do I know which one I need. There is yellow (18 teeth), red (21) and black (20). I have a 3.50 rear end.
63, There are more than that, and they have both right and left hand twists. I know of 16 to 22T. The right hand twist was used in the autos, and the left in the manuals.
With the 3.50, I would start with the 18T. I pick them up in the salvage yards laying on the ground or hanging on the speedo cable. You may need to set a bench mark to be able to know which direction that you need to go in. IMHO

PS: Don't get concerned over color, the tooth count and twist is what matters.
The last one that I replaced I went to a old time Ford Dealer here in Oregon, The old parts man asked the rear-end gear ratio and the tire size. With this infro he had a gear for my old 66 4x4, and it worked at the right speed. It's to bad that the old dealer is gone now and the new one that moved to town does not have all the old parts, I think the old parts man is selling the old stuff at swap meets.
