67 Temp gauge bizzareness

This is related to the thermostat leak link, I got that all fixed, but the temp gauge is going up and down seemingly at random. There is no rhyme or reason to it. It goes up to way beyond the high range and then drops down to normal position, then, after a while, for no apparent reason it rises way high again. The engine displays no other signs of overheating, could the gauge be whacko? This baffles me.

check your coolant level....I have noticed this type of behavior when the coolant is low.

I just had a Taruras do this, It had a replacement t stat in it, but was sticking. Put in a new one and it is good to go. How are the other gauges? All working good?

ive also had this problem and it was an air bubble in the engine. i took a pair of channel locks and crimped the return hose to the radiator shut and held it and the water pushed the bubble through. you could actually feel when the air came out. just a thought.

The weird thing is that it only does this for the first 10 miles of driving, then it all settles down and works normally. I know the t-stat is in right, springs into the block. I also know my coolant level is ok, I also paid for the higher quality t-stat, not the cheapo garbage one.
What baffles me is that it only does this for about 10 miles and that it doesnt puke coolant all over like an overheated engine would...
