I recently bought a 2001 expy xlt 5.4 2wd 63000 everything was good for the first week...Now I have a few things going on that are making owing this thing not to much fun.....First thing that started happening was once the vehicle was up to operating temp the shift between first to second would bang but only when picking up speed at a slow rate, If I was getting on it, it would almost seem to act as though I was riding the clutch in a standard, the shift would take to long.....It didn't seem like it was slipping though.....The next problem is when driving around the vehicle seems to be bogging down along with the 1st to 2nd gear thing going on....It seem like the power that was there when I bought the thing isn't there anymore....It almost feels like the truck is in a gear thats to high and won't kick down.....I checked the tranny fluid it looks new and smells fine...I'am lost with this thing I've always been a chevy guy so the fords are new to me....HELP................... Not to be ominous but I'd be worried about ANY used vehicle that had NEW transimission fluid in it, and no record of a reliable 3rd party replacing the fluid and giving the tranny a clean bill of health. Remember, most people try to hide tranny problems with saying, "Oh the trans was just serviced !" Its the whole "shiny object" effect.
I'll hope for your sake its something simple like a TPS, but I'd be real worried sombody offloaded their tranny troubles on you. Either tranny you have in this truck ain't cheap to fix. And it sounds tranny to me cause if I read you right, it seems to get worse with heat & a few miles. Many times the outward signs of baked tranny in its early stages of failing. If the simple fixes don't pan out, get it to a tranny shop before it breaks something big $$$$$$. A toasted tranny at 63,000 miles was either abused or forced to tow beyond its rated capacity. I laugh at these people using Expeditions and Tahoe's to tow their 15,000 pound Boston Whaler, or Hot Rod and 20 foot enclosed trailer.
Not so much the trucks fault, sounds maybe like whomever you bought it from is trying to swindle you. IMHO.
Oh man, if you have a bumper to bumper then let them eat the expense.....why shell out cashola when you already did for the warranty. Is it a Ford dealer warranty or a local dealer? Make sure you check the fine print for a deductable and whether it covers labor. Like DOCSpanky said about shiny things.
I would try replacing that TPS first, its about $50 from Autozone I think, callem'. I think Ford charges $100 for the TPS. Just my opinion, but your choice.
Ok so I picked up a manual for the expy and tested the TPS...manual said it should test .05 to 1.0 at closed throttle mine tested 3.47 at closed ....at full throttle the thing should test 5.0 mine tested .47 at full....So hopefully that will cure the problem, Going to discount now to get the TPS will keep everyone posted.....Jimmy
