Engine pings at load?

I was on a trip to Missourie - about 200 miles one way. On the way, I noticed that when my truck climbs up a hill at 55-65mph, it starts pinging. I am not sure what the problem could be. Anyone had this problem before?
When I am at slow speed, it climbs hills pretty good. I am not talking about steep hills - maybe one with about 5 degrees I would say and is pretty long climb. Also, I noticed that one spot, there is a steep hill - probably about 10 degree and then a flat piece of road for about 15 - 20ft and then another steep hill. The truck down shifted during the first hill and went fine. Up shifted during the flat spot and then did not down shift again during the next hill !! And it started pinging.
The truck is 1979 Ford F100 with a 302 engine. The engine was rebuilt before I bought the truck and probably has a bigger cam than stock. Carburetor is Edelbrock 600 cfm. Tranny is C6. I changed the oil on it before the voyage. Tires are 10.5 X 31 if that matters.
Any help to diagnose this problem will be appreciated. I am thinking of checking plugs, carbon buildup, etc. first. Will this problem occur if I have high compression pistons and if I am using low grade gas?

Sounds like spark knock. Your timing could be too advanced, jets too lean, EGR malfunctioning, and yes your fuel octane may be too low.

What is spark knock?

Timing could be a factor as I could not time it properly. The rpm keeps jumping around from 700 - 750. Planning to check the distributor.

I don't imagine the jets being too lean. I used the carb right out of box. I would think that 600cfm will be a little too big for 302 if not the right kind. What are your thoughts on that?

I don't know if my 1979 has an EGR setup. Where should I look for EGR valve?

I used 87 - 89 octane gas.

Check the timing first. I had purchased a edelbrock carb and installed it and it was way to rich, the fumes brought tears to your eyes and that was right out of the box. If you have high compression pistons and a larger cam you probably should run higher octane. Start with timing first though.

mblayton, did you have to rejet or change metering rods on the carb?

I replaced the timing chain maybe couple months back. However, I do hear some ticking sound after I did that. I replaced the water pump at the same time. I assumed it could be the fuel pump eccentric and has not caused any problem so far.

Not sure about vaccum advance in distributor - the distributor has been iffy to me ever since I got the truck. I am waiting to mess with it whenever I get the money to afford one.

I understand the money thing.

On the distributor, my wife's car had a distributor with a bad bearing in it. It messed with the timing soo bad that it did some major damage. She just kept driving when it started pinging really bad. Ended up burning a hole in two pistons. Needless to say we got stuck with a long block. Don't let this one ping too long.

No I did'nt need to change anything on the carb, all I did was turn both screws in until they bottomed out and then turned them back 1 1/2 turns each. They had them turned out 3 full turns (thats what I counted when I turned in) way to rich.

Seems everyone is indicating timing. I will check on the timing and the distributor and post back.

I have been having increasing difficulty at highway speeds with pinging lately, combined with surging/stalling on startup, and I really want to solve it (inexpensively, of course ) before the top of the engine flies out through the hood! I have read numerous postings, and so I have lots of stuff to try. Glad I found FTE!!

I will post when I find out if something worked.

I did go ahead and changed the distributor, but ended opening a can of worms. Read posts Distributor Installation question in this forum.
