Hard to start after sitting

I will try to make this as short as I can. I have a 90 f150 with the 4.9. In the morning or after the truck sits I have to let the fuel pump run for almost a half hour before it will start. If I try to start it before the fuel pump turns off on its own it wont run. I replaced the back tank pump and it now just pushes the fuel to the front tank. I noticed there is no return line to the back tank. (great) So where should I start?
And thanks to everyone that helped with the cluck problem.

Sounds like the tank switching solenoid is not shifting all of the way. There should be a return line that comes from the switching solenoid on the frame.

Is there a part hanging on the frame behind the high pressure fuel pump that has 6 lines going to it?

Ok, then it has check valves in each pump assembly. One tank may be pumping into the other. These are known to fail.

The check valves are inside the plastic housing. I've never broken one open to look at it.

I know this may sound stupid but which plastic housing are you talking about? Pump housing?

Yes, the pump housing. Sorry, I've been away from the PC longer than I wanted.
