Ok so my search for a ram air box for my hood has come to a halt. Can't find one for a 4.6L engine. Every company I have found only makes them for the 5.4L. So I have turned to the alternative of making my own. So I got a filter and some fittings. I hooked it up today and the engine DIED on me twice. Both about 5-10 secs after start up. I have no air flow sensor or any other sensor that the stock filter system had on it hooked up. Is this my problem? If it is what do i do about it. Any help would be awsome.
Well, the problem is you NEED the MAF sensor hooked up in order to keep the truck running. Its located inside the half of the air box that does not hold the air filter. You can hook it uo right at the throttle body or you can leave that part of the air box or circle installed. There is also a sensor in the botom of the half of the air box that the filter sits in. Thats mainly an Air Temp sensor and the truck will still run if you do not hook this back up. However, if you do not hook it up or have it located where it will sense hot air you will get a "check engine" light or SES light. If that sensor senses nothing but hot air it will make your truck run "slugish". You want to make sure it is located where it will snese cooler air in order to get the best performance.
Like I said before, you NEED the MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor) hooked up no matter what. If you are looking under the hood it is located inside of the left half of the filter box/circle. Unless you are mechanical I would not advise trying to relocate that part. UNless you have a friend that knows what they are doing. It is easy to damage the tiny sensor filament and VERY expensive to replace.
