A couple Q's

So my brother in law got a little rammy moving his old truck my new truck with the loader tractor. He punched a small hole in the oil pan. Can I remove the oil pan without having to pull the motor? It looks like it will clear but I dont want to hit any snags along the way. Also one more question he swapped out the stock rear end and put other one in its place. Just wondering if this will create any problem when engaged in 4 wheel drive? By the way the truck is a 1985 F-150 4x4 with a 300 ci.
Thanks,
Rick

Yup i did it with my 85 4X4. Just undo the nuts that bolt the motor mounts to the frame jack it up and lay a 2X4 flat on each side. Comes out easy. It can be done with out jacking it up, but the little bit of room makes it alot easier to get a TQ wrench in there. took me about an hour to change the oil pan gasket.

Is the new rear end the same ratio as the front end? If not, you cant use the FWD.

bubba nailed it.

The front and rear diffs have to be the same ratio, or stuff will bind.

ford was wierd, some fronts were 3.54 while the rear was 3.55 of 4.09 and 4.10. So if thats what you find out it's find, but if you have a 3.08 rear and a 3.55 front you'll have problems, same if it were a 3.55 rear and a 3.08 front. And the same goes for 4.10

I still have the old rear end so I guess thats a good things. I'm also glad to hear I dont have to pull the motor to change oil pan. Should I take it to some shop to have the gears switched or is that something I can do on my own without to many difficulties.

Gears are something you leave to professionals, unless you know about them, which i'm assuming you don't, it's ok i don't.

But backlash and shims and stuff come into play, not just throwing a new ring and pinion in.

Is it a 9" rear?(no cover on back of diff, 3rd member is removeable) or an 8.8" has a removeable cover.

if it's a 9" you can just swap the 3rd member with one with correct gearing yourself.

Thanks, for all the info, I was told that the other rear end can be saved. Just another question to ask. My truck currently has a 300 ci and a 4 speed tranny. I was wondering if it is possible to swop in a 351 windsor out of a 1980's ford van that is currently hooked up to a c-6? If the swap is possible, I would like to keep the 4 speed that is in the truck right now. Would there have to be any mods made to keep the 4 spd? If I am able to swop in the 351, will it create any tranfer-case problems?
Thanks,
Rick

You can use the tranny with a 351W flywheel NOT the Flexplate that will be on it, you need to put a pilot bushing in the end of the crank. And swap the frame towers to a small block mount.

That's about it.

Thanks DT, I will hopefully be picking up the 351 within a couple weeks. I'm sure more Q's will arise when it comes to actually installing the motor. I had a simple project but want to have a motor that I can build with in coming time.

get as much of the exhaust as you can, it will save trouble later once it's installed. Overall though it shouldn't be a bad swap.

you got your head on straight. IF you want a hauler keep the 300, but if you want something that will haul butt go with the 351. Sounds like you'd be better off with the 351.

I know that the 300 ci is one of the best motors ford made but a 351 can have a lot of upgrades put onto it. I'd like to give one of those honda civics a run for his money and I think a 351 would do a little better then a 300 lol.
Thanks,
Rick

Go for it. The W blocks are a nice little engine, and can be stroked out to around 390 cubes (give or take) with some nice performance mods.

I pulled up next to one of those Honda's of which you speak last week, 31 inch tires, and a quiet 400 cid resting under the hood just last week. His big a$$ed noisy tailpipe was put to rest by the next red light.... I couldn't help but notice his buddy laughing at him when he finally pulled up. Normally I don't bother, but this was just one of those times I couldn't resist. Had the big whale tail spoiler, noisy tail-pipe, some crappy lowering job that had his alignment way out (front tires were leaning inward at the top) and the car just reeked of nothing but add-on looks and no go. Makes ya feel pretty good knowing he wasted whatever he earned at McDonald's the last few months to dress up a car mommy and daddy bought him.
