86 351W wont start

ok, well, it starts sometimes. it's wierd. the motor turns over and it's getting fuel into the carb. it just wont fire. if you stand on the brakes, however, it will start but then it runs really rough. if you drive it and give it gas, it pops and will eventually backfire and shut off. i was thinking this was a vacuum problem, but i could easily be wrong. if it is a vacuum problem, where should i look? all the hoses seem to be fine. if it's not that, then what? please help. it ran great last week, now this!

i was just outside messing with it. i put a screwdriver in the wire coming from the coil and set it on the radiator shroud. i thought i should see a spark there when i turn the motor over, but nothing. i just put this ignition module and coil in about 6 months ago. ideas?

My 85 351w HO was giving me a similar problem. I would be driving down the road and it would just die, like you turned the key off. Turned out that the wiring harnes that runs from the ignition module to the coil, also has the temp sensor and oil pressure sensor wires in this harness had a short in it. I spliced in new wires and it worked great for about 8 months until last week it started doing it again. I went to the local bone yard and pulled a harness off a truck there and its been fine. Harness cost $15. I would check the harness. I found mine was bad by having someone crank the truck over and wiggling the harness. Looking back I would not waste the time splicing in wires to the original harness, just find a different one.
