rack and pinion steering

rack and pinion steering
just bought a 1960 f-100 was wondering ,has any one put in a rack and pinion steering set up on the straight original axle ? it looks like it would work ,any help would be great want to keep the front end stock but just want a little safer front end , also how about brakes to my stock axle ? my uncle gave me free run of his junk yard so i just need some help on what parts will work thanks ,serge

It's near impossible to use R&P on a beam axle. I have seen it done by mounting the R&P on the axle, but then you have a steering shaft problem. If you want a safe truck, stick with the stock type steering and change the box to a Toyota PS box. It's an easy swap and works well. Do a few more posts until the search function become available or scan the previous topics back a month or two, this conversion has been covered many times. Lucky you on the family junkyard deal!
