Problem overheating

I have a 77 F250 4x4 witha 460 in it. Lately she has started to run hot, right at the top of the temp gauge , although its onyl the factory gauge, it never usually runs high ont he gauge. If i am driving around town it will run up to the H on the gauge but once on the highway it will drop a bit but still running hotter then normal. The clutch fan spins although not sure if this means is good or not, if the clutch fan is to blame how will I know? The water pump is not leaking out any seals so I assume its fine.

When it all astarted for the first time the rad overflowed and spilled out some coolant, the level is still fine though and it hasn't done it since. There is no overflow container on the rad either if that helps.

I am thinking maybe its my rad? Any thoughts? Maybe the rad might be getting plugged? any way to check that?

If it's not leaking coolant, then the next step would be to flush the system - this should be done every 2-3 years anyway. Drain the coolant, pull the hoses loose from the engine and remove the thermostat. Then take a garden hose and flush water both directions through the engine, radiator and heater core until clean clear water comes out the other end. Then reconnect the hoses (good time to replace bad ones if needed), install new thermostat and fill with correct mix of coolant and water. Also take the hose and spray out the fins of the radiator, try to get all the bugs and leaves out.

Do you have a fan shroud? That makes a huge difference in city driving.

yeah I have a fan shround, one of the blades on the fan is bent but works fine. I just installed a new thermostat but flushing it will be a good idea, where shoudl I put the hose to put the water through the cooling pasages? Right at the thermostat housing?

I would run the hose where the lower radiator hose attaches to the water pump and on the intake where the heater hose attaches. Flush back and forth until water is clean.
