Ok, this one's got me stumped. I went out to pick up my horse trailer today and the ole 400 was running a little warm, high M on the TEMP gauge. Hooked into the trailer (16' 4 horse slant bumper pull) and everything ran perfect! the temp dropped back down to E and never moved. Even pulling hills at 55-60 mph she never missed a beat. I'm not complaining...just curious Any ideas?
Thanks!

Airflow can have a dramatic effect on cooling. If you drove 20-30 mph to pick up your trailer, and then put her out on the highway at 60-70 mph you might have explanation. This would increase especially if you aren't running a fan shroud.
The speed stayed the same, 55-60 empty and loaded. And I'm running a shroud. Just did bearings, timing chain, and hv pump so oil pressure/temp shouldn't have affected it.
i had a smiliar heating problem.. as i started to fix i replaced theromstat , then had raditor clean out and rodded and flush system runs 190 now by gauge
I found a piece of crud (scale/mold flash) blocking my thermostat once...
You can also rejuvinate those old Ford gages by cleaning the flex circuit then using some dielectric grease on the contact points. They will work like new then
