M5OD out AOD in?

So it looks like I have a broken M5OD. The truck is a 1990 F-150 supercab 5.0L 4x4 with a standard bed. I have been searching the forums for a couple days to find my best option and I thought that a ZF would be the right choice. Then I compared prices. A ZF looks like it will cost me in the neighborhood of $1100. The average price I'm seeing on the AOD is about $550. I would think that I could get all of the parts to do the conversion and still come in under the cost of a ZF and I would gain in towing capacity as well. Why isn't everybody doing this swap? So far it looks like this would require a steering column, flex plate, torque converter, transmission, linkage, and possibly some drive shaft work. I have the flex plate and torque converter from another 5.0 but I don't know what transmission. Any possibility of using these parts? Pros-save money, better towing. Cons-lot of work, reduced fuel economy. What am I missing?

Sorry, they start at $900 and go up to $1600 on that site. Then I'm sure that shipping would be pricy. To me, $900 plus shipping doesn't qualify as cheap. Especially since I only paid $650 for the truck.
