How Many Miles

I’m looking at a 1996 F 250, 2 wheel drive, automatic trans with 300,000 miles on it. Seems to run good, I was wondering how many mile can a person expect from a 7.3 liter Power Stroke diesel? Is there anything I should look at in particular?

I agree, that is a lot of miles. I've seen some PSD's with over 500k...but you have to remember that the rest of the truck has 300,000 miles too...If you ABSOLUTELY really want to buy it, I would make sure that they have all the records; oil changes, parts serviced, engine rebuilds/replacements, tranny rebuilds/replacements, etc. I'd be really surprised if the tranny was original or wasn't rebuilt. First, check the tranny fluid. It should be a reddish color and make sure it doesn't have a burnt smell to it. If it smells burnt....could mean your tranny is burnt! Next, unbolt the intake off of the turbo and check out the turbo fins. They should be sharp with no chunks taken out of them or dents. With that kind of miles, I would HIGHLY recommend taking it up to a trusted diesel mechanic and have them check it out. Good Luck!

I have one that has 560,000 miles on it and Havent done anything major to it besides about every 50,000 miles or so, I have to replace cam shaft sensor, that is it been a hell of truck and run hard. I had the oppurnity to meet the leader over the lauch team fo IH that designed the PSD and he told me they would last forever, he said avg life is about 350,000 to 400,000, before things start going bad. He told me to keep the engine oil changed and clean, that the PSD didn't like air in the oil and to keep the fuel clean and to let breath that is would last for ever, he suggested to me to take the kitty's off and mufflers and run a straight pipe...exact words he told me is to let the PSD breath and the harder you run it the better it likes it...I beleive it..Mine has been through 7 kinds of HELL and about 400,000 of the 560,000 has had a 32 ft Gooseneck behind it towing equipment through the US and Canada.

If the price is right I would buy it. 5K or less I would guess. But at the same time I like to wrench on my PSD's so it wouldnt scare me off to bad.
