hello everyone i have an 86 f150 4x4 4 spd with an efi 302 . I'm having trouble with starting it when its hot if i drive it for awhile then shut it off and come back 15-20 min later it hardly wants to start it is like it hardly has enough juice to turn over . but if i drive it and let it sit for a couple hours it starts just fine in the last week i thought it might be the starter so i changed that along with the selinoid but still have the same prob other than that it runs great . any other ideas on what it could be ?
Having the same issue as well. After fifteen second pauses, usually on the third crank it will start. I avoid making convenience stops (i.e. 7-11) because of this. Been going on for about two weeks now. To me, it appears to be a fuel problem, like it is evaporating out of the line somehow.
As of yesterday, even my cold starts have been idling rough. My fuel pump on the front tank is shot, so have been using the rear exclusively until I drop the front for repairs. I have changed the fuel filter (along driver frame rail) once, but thinking it might need another go because of the front tank. I have been using it sporadically trying to get the gas out of it, but it just keeps crapping out on me. Might have a corroded tank that has wrecked havoc on my pump and filter.....
thanks guys but to me it seems like an electrical prob ie. starter , alt , battery , sielinoid, maybe the voltage reg in the alt gets to hot and has fried the battery or just isn't working properly just some thoughts any of them sound close ?
Get a timing light and check your ignition timing! Didn't you already say that you replaced your starter?
thanks but ive allready checked all those things and the timing is right on and the motor has been rebuilt 6 months ago so i doubt it is carbon build up on the pistons the timming was on then and still is now
I had a similar hot motor/slow cranking situation last week, I just threw the battery on a charger to FULLY charge and it seemed to have worked. Many starts and stops in high heat with,(so far) , normal starting. Hope this helps. Mike
OK, I am replacing the Duraspark III system on my '83 truck due to problems like this. This system is computer controlled, and the timing will jump from being so retarded that it will barely run, to severely advanced. It is the computer on my truck causing all of my troubles.
Does your distributor have a vacuum advance connector on the side? If it doesent, you have a computer controlled advance. The TFI-IV system is computer contrilled, too.
I'm moving to a Duraspark II system with vacuum advance so my engine will run at its best. The Dura III system cant be adjusted at all.
With gas out the roof price-wise, my truck is getting very expensive to run.
I haded this same problem. I found that my starter was getting hot and causeing it to sieze up. After i replaced the starter my problem went away.
no were getting somewhere lol . thats what i did at first replaced the starter and selinoid , the prob went away for a couple of weeks but now its back . could i have 2 bad starters ? or does something else go along with these probs ?
What condition are the batter cables in? If they are old and the wire inside the casing is all green, a hot start condition will make it seem as if your battery is dead, or cause the starter to drag.
Pay particular attention to the grounds, as they're the most likely cause.
The greenish corrosion adds a huge amount of resistance to the wire, and under heavy load these wires will fail. Hot start conditions equate to a heavy load.
I also replaced my battery cables but this was the first thing that i did. I had to replace them becuase the starter started to fry them. I didn't even think that this was part of the cause but it would make sence that this would add draw to the battery at startup.
