Just my 2 cents worth; 3 years ago i installed a 77 merc 460/w a C6 & warn overdrive in my 67 f-100 short-bed. My favorite toy!! At the time i also installed a 4/11 9'' rear end. When i feel like playing I put the OD out and hang on! mpg for a days play?Maybe 5-6. But put the OD in and keep my foot out of the 4bbl and presto! 16-18 mpg. It's not as quick as my long bed 67/w 428cj But it cost a LOT less, both in time and money! SO GO FOR IT!!!Fabmandelux.
1968F100shortbed said he has a choice between a 351W or a 460. He implied that fuel mileage was'nt that important but that it would be a play truck and he wanted alot of HP
Out of the 2 choices I still stand by the 460. For the ease of putting it in the truck and getting the most torque and HP out of it I still think it is the best engine for him.
Dollar for dollar spent between putting in an 390 versus a 460 I'd bet the 460 would win the race every time. In other words spend the same amount of money on the engine rebuild (if needed) plus any go fast parts between the 2 engines in the same truck with the same transmission and rear gear and I'd bet the 460 would walk all over the 390 every time.
Everybody has their favorite engines. I love the 351w in my 71 F100. I think it is a great all around engine. FE people love the FE's. etc
He asked which engine between the 351w and the 460. Without fuel mileage being a concern and stricktly looking for performance, the 460 wins hands down.
Great engine with updated valve train componants. No shaft type rocker arms to worry about etc.
460 wins in my book. Let the flaming begin. lol
