I have an 87 f-250 that I put a dana 60 in and am now putting a 460 in it. It had a 302 before. I finally got all the parts together for the motor and put it into the truck but the motor did not turn over. So, we took it out and found that the bellhousing was hitting the flywheel and I grinded the bellhousing. so, I put it in again but once again the motor would not turn over. The slip collar on the input shaft, where the throw out bearing rides, was hitting the fingers on the clutch. I am not sure if my flywheel is too big or the bellhousing is too small. I got the parts from junkyards so I'm guessing something has to be wrong. The number on the bell is D7TA and the flywheel says D9TE. I would really appreciate some help since not many people are of much help.
thanks
The thing is i know the bellhousing goes with a 460 but im just wondering if it is for a pre 1979 460 motor, or if there is even a difference. I know I have seen bellhousings with a casting of D9TE and D7TA, are they different or do I have another problem.
the D7TA is from a 351M/400. Ford did not have a stick 460 IIRC. [*edit* BACK THEN] That belhousing was meant for an 11" clutch, but others have used (with modifications) an 12" clutch/flywheel. Take some plummers putty, roll it up, and place it around your parts inside the trans, put it all together, take it apart. This will show where you do and do not have clearance.
Er. wait. Just re-reread the problem. You are saying the fingers are hitting on the collar? That is very odd. What trans are you using? I cant imagine a t19 or a NP435 having a different height they set the input shaft at. Are you shure the clutch is installed correctly on the flywheel in the right holes?

The trans is a 3 speed plus granny gear Borg Warner T-18. The clutch is bolted up right. Could I be using the wrong clutch? I bout a 300 dollar centerforce clutch. I am not sure what size the clutch is but it fits on the flywheel and after some modification it turns in the bellhousing.
but the fingers still hit the sleave? that is wrong!! waay wrong. Something is out of whack. Take it apart and double check it again.... Post pics too if you can
I'm sorry I meant the friction plate is hitting the throw bearing retaining sleeve, I guess I will just put a block plate in it, thats what everyone else seems to do.

OK, that makes alot more sense. My clutch was a very close fit as you describe. Are you using the dust sheild between the flywheel and blocK? That will give you more clearance if you arent using it. Mine was very very close.... I think my flywheel was machined to within an inch of its life too. It came from a '76 F150 with a 360, and a 3 speed manual trans. The 12" 460 flywheel from an '83 and up is significantly thicker than the 360 one I used. How much further does it need to go to mate up?
